Green Island Growers have obtained one of the five licences issued by the Jersey Health Ministry to cultivate cannabis.

Green Island will be cultivating medical cannabis with the goal to produce finished cannabis-based medicinal products (CBMP’s).

The company is converting an existing glasshouse into a high-tech, hybrid glasshouse and will be combining traditional farming with new technologies. It is also completing the build of a purpose-built GMP processing facility.

The founding team includes Jersey’s leading glasshouse growers, the Blake family, finance veteran Neel Sahai, celebrity agent George Macari and agricultural engineer Andrew Hamon.

Green Island’s CEO, Neel Sahai, commented: “This is a major milestone for us after a lot of hard work. It allows us to move forward to production with confidence and we are seeing tremendous opportunities to bring products to the local and European markets and at the same time have a hand in helping develop a new industry in Jersey.”

The company has stated that the receipt of this licence is a huge milestone and a signal that Jersey is keen to continue building and driving the industry forward in Europe.

Green Island Growers is set on connecting Jersey’s nascent cannabis industry with the fast growing global market, and already has partnerships with Sana Life Sciences, a leading importer of cannabis medicines in Europe, to source high quality medicine for the local market. Also, with JV with JMCC Group – a global company producing GMP-certified, Jamaican grown medical cannabis – to set up a wholesale distribution business for the European market.

George McBride founder of Hanway Associates, and a non-executive director to Green Island, said: “I have been very encouraged by the quiet, competent and diligent way in which Green Island have set up their operations to date.

“Cannabis is one of the most challenging sectors in which to build a business in terms of both regulations and competition. However, there is also a once in a generation opportunity for growth.”
