Proposal for medical cannabis facility put forward on Isle of Man

Peel NRE has proposed to establish a multi-million-pound science innovation and research centre (SIRC), sustainable energy park and medical cannabis facility on the Isle of Man.

The proposals have been put forward by the regeneration and clean energy specialist following Isle of Man legislation changes in 2021 regarding cannabis production and exportation. The proposed development aims to help the British Crown Dependency island develop home-grown talent that will contribute to cutting-edge research into cannabinoids for pharmaceutical uses.

The Isle of Man Government announced in June last year that opening the island up to the medical cannabis sector could help to create 250 new jobs and generate £3m a year – making it “a world-leading exporter” of cannabis.

Stephen Snowdon, planning and development manager at Peel NRE, part of Peel L&P, commented: “The Isle of Man Government is seeking to establish an innovation cluster on the island, dedicated to the production and export of cannabis-derived products serving the medicinal and pharmaceutical markets.

“We are excited to bring our proposals forward to help to create a new export market, more jobs and attract a range of specialist scientific and research and development industries to the Island to support the local economy.”

Laurence Skelly, President of Tynwald and Minister for Enterprise, told Cannabis Wealth: “Diversifying the economy is a significant part of the Isle of Man Government’s Island Plan and the development of Medicinal Cannabis for export is one of the key sectors to bring forward this diversification.

“The Island’s Medicinal Cannabis export proposition is to develop high-quality products and attract new investment through utilising the Island’s stellar reputation as a well-regulated jurisdiction.

“We continue to welcome inward investment and I look forward to hearing more about the proposals as they develop further and are ultimately finalised.”

Peel NRE is launching a public consultation to help shape the plans before an application goes to the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture later this year.

“With 20 years’ experience of delivering transformational projects across the UK and extensive knowledge of the Island, we’re in a strong position to support the Isle of Man Government to achieve success in this emerging growth industry and we invite the public to have their say on these plans,” said Snowdon.

To be based on land at Cooil Road, Braddan, the detail for the first phase of Peel NRE’s SIRC development will include two units for the cultivation facility as well as an access road, engineering works and preliminary landscaping.

Peel NRE has stated the scheme will create new, high-quality technical jobs, bring further economic opportunities and deliver investment to the Isle of Man that will unlock partnerships across the public and private sectors.

The company will incorporate and build on innovative technologies found in cannabis facilities across the world to set a gold standard for the burgeoning industry and to enable the Island to lead the way on medicinal research and cultivation best practice.

The multi-million-pound development will represent a major investment in the Isle of Man, bringing economic opportunities to the local supply chain from the construction to operational stages. It will generate high quality technical jobs by establishing a destination for science and technological excellence showcasing the Island’s innovation and capitalising on the global growth in the sector.

The public consultation period will be held between Monday 14, February and Monday, 7 March 2022.
